I am responding to your posting for information regarding points toward a distinguished status. All criteria for earning points is determined and evaluated by Kiwanis International, so the District has no control and can only share opinions and suggestions.

First, and regrettably, 5 points is the maximum for building and sponsoring new service leadership programs. I agree this leaves out the incentive to do more.

Second, the normal procedure for giving points for sponsoring a new club is that they are awarded in the year the new club is organized (which means all the required paper work has been filed with KI) and the charter night is not a factor as that is an arbitrary date that could come well after the club is actually in operation.

Question 1 – Our club has started two new service leadership programs this year (1 Builders Club and 1 K-Kids Club). Do we only receive the 5 bonus points or can we receive 5 points for each club? If only 5 points, then where is the incentive to build additional service leadership programs in a single year?

Question 2 – Our club is currently sponsoring the start of a new Kiwanis Club in the community. While the club will be organized before the end of September 2008, it will likely not receive a “charter” until after September. Does our club get the 20 points for the 2008 year in the Growth category for sponsoring the new club or in the year the charter is awarded?
